Carbon Monoxide poisoning can happen at any time of the year, but the danger is greater during the winter. Hundreds of people die from carbon monoxide poisoning every year, and thousands of others suffer dizziness, nausea, and convulsions. Carbon Monoxide gas is odorless and colorless, so you can’t always tell it is present in the air around you. Signs of carbon monoxide poisoning include headache, mental confusion, and extreme tiredness.

Any appliance in your home that burns fuel such as gas, oil, kerosene, wood, or charcoal may emit Carbon Monoxide. If you have an appliance that burns these fuels, you should also have a Carbon Monoxide detector in your home.

If you have several gas appliances, you may be constantly exposed to low levels of carbon monoxide. You may have mild health problems you haven’t been able to explain, such as eye, nose, and throat irritation; headaches; fatigue; nausea; heart palpitations; or breathing problems.

If your detector alerts you to dangerous levels of Carbon Monoxide and you cannot locate its source, or if you have any symptoms of Carbon Monoxide poisoning that cannot be explained, leave your home immediately and call 9-1-1.

Did you know that having a working smoke alarm reduces a person’s chance of dying in a fire by half? For the best protection, install smoke alarms on every level of your home, outside every sleeping area, and in every bedroom.

In March 2007, the Pacific County Fire District 1 Board of Fire Commissioners approved a resolution to adjust the amount patients pay for emergency services.

Does the Fire District bill for service even if I am not transported? No. The Fire District only bills for service if you are transported.

How much does an ambulance transport cost? If you are transported by ambulance, you are charged a user’s fee, which is based on the level of care you received during the trip, plus mileage to the hospital.

How does the Fire District bill for services? Pacific County Fire District 1 bills your insurance provider(s) directly for treatment and transport. The Fire District contracts with a separate company, Systems Design, to process the billing.

If I pay my taxes, do I still get a bill for service? No. If you are a taxpayer of the Fire District, the amount your medical insurance(s) pay for a transport will be considered payment in full. The Fire District recognizes that taxpayers already directly or indirectly pay for emergency medical services with a portion of their taxes.

What other medical services does the Fire District provide? The Fire District provides non-emergency transports, medical stand-by at local events, blood pressure checks, injury prevention programs, CPR/First Aid training, and other assistance requiring medical expertise.
